Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet…neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. (Neh 8:10)
One of the least recognized and most important assertions of scripture is that God wants for us to be happy. “Rejoice in the Lord,” Paul encouraged. And then, figuring the statement hadn’t quite sunk in, he repeated “and again I say, rejoice.”
But joy doesn’t always happen naturally. Sometimes it must be generated. “Eat the fat, drink the sweet,” commanded Nehemiah. In other words create happiness by doing something that makes you happy.
I believe more Christians need hobbies. I like to keep aquariums; to fish, hunt, and garden. I love to go to the beach, watch sci-fi on TV, go to movies, hike, and a lot of other things. And I need to do these things on a regular basis to maintain a balanced perspective on life. Life is not all labor and the contemplation of serious issues, after all. God wants us busy with the joy of our hearts. (Ecc. 5:20.)
So my word for you this month is “lighten up.” Get outside and do something fun. Or do something fun inside, whichever. Just make sure you have a good time, because God wants us, always, to rejoice.
