Will the real Jesus please stand up?

13 Nov

Acts 10:38–You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.

Hebrews 13:8, 9–Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be carried about with various and strange teachings…

There are several versions of Jesus. There’s the movie Jesus. He’s blue-eyed and tall, (even though he’s a middle-easterner), and speaks with a perfect Elizabethan accent, (despite the fact that Jesus spoke Aramaic). He’s kind of artsy, too, and a little spacey, even though the real Jesus grew up as a common laborer. (Contrast this with the muscular, down-to earth carpenter found on a typical construction site). No, the real Jesus wasn’t British. Neither was he an airy wimp; the real Jesus was a real man, through and through.

There are several spiritual versions of Jesus, too. There’s the Judgmental Jesus, (you’ll never be good enough for that one), and the exclusionist Jesus, (for the “us-four-and-no-more” crowd), the powerless Jesus (healing was for Bible times, not today), and the busy, uncaring Jesus (why bother with your insignificant need?)

But there’s really only one Jesus, and that’s the Jesus found in God’s word.

The real Jesus isn’t judgmental. (Jn. 3:17 says, for God did not send the Son into the world to judge it, but that the world through him might be saved). He’s not an exclusionist, either. He’ll accept anyone who’ll come to him. (Jn. 6:37: Whoever comes to me I will never cast out). He’s not uncaring, either, for he went about healing all, and he’s never too busy, because he’s God, whose ears are always open to your cry. (Ps. 34:15)

Yes the real Jesus is not only strong and straightforward; he’s open-hearted, caring, and always there for you. The real Jesus heals the sick and multiplies limited resources. The real Jesus rescues the hopeless and forgives the unforgivable.

So don’t hang your faith on a Hollywood savior, read the Bible and put your faith in the Jesus found on its timeless pages. That Jesus–the Real Jesus–is God himself manifested in human flesh. He’s Love, Power, and Mercy incarnate, and any miracle he’s ever done, he can do for you.

Today’s prayer: Thank you Jesus for being you. You never change, so I can always, always, count on you. Thank you for meeting me at the point of my need today.
